This goes far, far beyond guilty pleasure.

The press release arrived in my inbox, same as hundreds of others. It contained a link to a stream of the new Adam Lambert CD, Trespassing. I am not a reality TV fan; I had never so much as heard Adam Lambert before. (To say I’m a bit of a music snob—or was, anyway—wouldn’t be far off the mark.)

On a lark, I decided to click it; I just wanted to see what he sounded like.

I didn’t expect to fall in love.

From the get-go—the über-catchy title track—I was hooked. The song begins with group vocals and hand claps, buttressed by a steady, addictive beat. And Lambert’s vocals? If you (like much of America) have already been exposed, you know how sublime his voice is: straight out, falsetto, full throttle, controlled scream—really, he can do it all.

In “Trespassing,” punk and glam rock find unlikely companions in electronica and alternative music, genres that allow snippets of Lambert’s multilayered personality to come through. So, as his different musical persuasions unfold, so does he.

Malleable pipesAmong the track listing’s crowd-drawing cuts are the irresistible “Kickin’ In” and Bruno Mars’ cute-as-fluff “Never Close Our Eyes.” You want to dance? You’ll enjoy “Trespassing,” a catchy, fun-filled hybrid of Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury. “Shady” sprinkles its funk-fueled hooks with lovely harmonies. Lambert’s dance numbers tend to sound the same, but his renditions “differentiate” one tune from the next.

On the other hand, his ballads defy pop music’s cookie-cutter mold: The power of “Broken English” rests on Lambert’s malleable pipes, while the ethereal “Underneath” shines with its persuasive theatricality. “Outlaws of Love” is a smooth ballad that demonstrates the singer’s depth as a performer—and his enviable octaves
